Today’s a day for mothers! And in celebration of these all-important ladies, here are ten songs in honour of mothers everywhere.

  1. The Drums – Let’s Go Surfing

Apparently a lot of YouTube commenters think the lyrics are “Obama, I wanna go surfing”, which seems strange. Not being an American, I didn’t realise you were supposed to run your beach trips by the President first. The words are actually “Mama, I wanna go surfing” and the whole song seems to be a conversation between a depressed mother and her surfer son. That’s my take, but who cares, it reeks of this bizarre sunlight phenomenon which hasn’t been seen in Ireland since 2006…

  1. The Beatles – Your Mother Should Know

Mothers were a big deal for the Beatles, especially John, who lost his mother Julia in an accident at a young age. This trippy number from the Magical Mystery Tour is evocative of old-timey music, and reminds me of being very small. Like most of The Beatles’ stuff, it’s something my own mother danced to before I was born.

  1. Elvis Presley- That’s All Right Mama

Where would we be if Mammy interfered in our love lives? (Maybe, dare I say it, better off?) Anyway, Elvis is taking none of it in one of his first ever hits.

  1. Kate Bush – This Woman’s Work

Men feel a little shunted to the side during labour and this song perfectly captures the fear and anticipation of a new father.

  1. James Vincent McMorrow- We Don’t Eat

A beautiful song all about trust, losing faith and listening to your mother’s good advice.

  1. The Spice Girls – Mama

Definitely the cheesiest song on the list, but one I couldn’t leave out. We all torment our mothers from time to time (especially as teenage girls) and this song reminds us that we do love her (not very) deep down. And she loves us. Sniff. I’ve just got something in my eye…

  1. Scissor Sisters- Take Your Mama

You’re a proud gay man, enjoying life. The only nagging problem is you haven’t quite got around to telling your mother that you’re not into girls. So take her out to a club, “get her jacked up on some cheap champagne” and let it slip. And then find out she knew all along.

  1. The Rolling Stones – Mother’s Little Helper

Raising kids is no picnic, so you pop a pill or twenty. Before you know it, you’re hepped up on goofballs and your kids are… well, who knows where?

  1. Rizzle Kicks – Mama Do The Hump

Ridiculously catchy, and their mammies (with James Corden) made an appearance in the video.

  1. Fountains of Wayne – Stacey’s Mom

What woman among us doesn’t want to be like Stacey’s Mom? She’s got it goin’ on, after all…
