The cutest cartoon sidekicks

The Daily Shift’s Roisin Peddle takes a look at some of the cutest ever cartoon sidekicks…

They may not always talk. They may only appear in a handful of scenes. But they are the characters that everyone remembers and loves. Yes, it’s the cutest cartoon sidekicks, those little (usually animal) familiars that follow the hero/heroine everywhere.

  1. Timon and Pumbaa, The Lion King

The Lion King contains one of Disney’s saddest ever scenes, but it also has Timon and Pumbaa. Long before those ads, Timon made meerkats famous as wisecracking hucksters, while warthog Pumbaa was endearingly unhygienic and stupid.

  1. Thumper, Bambi

Look, if you don’t find bunnies cute, especially tiny bunnies who thump their left hind paw and dispense sage advice, then you’re probably dead and should get yourself along to the nearest séance.

  1. Meeko, Pocahontas

Meeko, like real raccoons, will do almost anything for food. This sly and cheeky critter is the cutest of all Pocahontas’ animal friends. I wish someday I could get all the animals to be my friend.

  1. Pascal (and Maximus), Tangled

2010’s Tangled was utterly charming and was made even more delightful by the presence of Rapunzel’s pet chameleon Pascal. How she got a chameleon or why he’s called Pascal no-one knows. Pascal is totally devoted to his mistress and wears his expressive little heart on his sleeve. An honourable mention goes to Maximus, the badass horse.

  1. Many (but especially the Alien Squeeze Toy) in Toy Story

There is so much cuteness (yet so much horror and sadness) in the three Toy Story movies. Rex, the neurotic dinosaur, Mr Slinky, the gruff-voiced slinky, Hamm the piggy bank, are just some of the cuties in this. However my own favourites are Bullseye, the silent and loyal horse, and the Alien Squeeze Toy, three little green men who come from Pizza Planet and worship the Claaaaaaawwwww….

  1. Jiminy Cricket, Pinocchio

Let’s go all the way back in time to 1940, and Pinocchio. Insects can be a little creepy, but Jiminy is a true friend to Pinocchio, and he’s got a top hat. Sold.

  1. The minions, Despicable Me

Gru is the despicable supervillain (with a heart of gold natch) with an army of cute yellow blobs to obey his every command. The minions are far less interested in villainy and prefer fun instead.

  1. Kevin and Dug, Up

Up is one of Pixar’s finest films of recent years and that’s saying something. Kevin, the exotic bird that Russell and Carl discover in the jungle, likes eating things she shouldn’t and getting into scrapes. Their team is completed with Dug, an adorable, friendly dog who always gets… SQUIRREL!

Chip (via Ink and Pixel Club)

  1. Chip, Beauty and the Beast

Leaving aside the thought of being transformed into sentient crockery, which is quite horrifying, there’s nothing but cuteness to be had from Chip, the tiny cracked cup from Beauty and the Beast.

Abu and the carpet (via fanpop)

  1. Abu, Aladdin

Monkeys are adorable. Abu, Aladdin’s monkey companion, is doubly so. A little cynical, very mischievous  and with a voice slightly like Donald Duck’s, Abu is one of the cutest sidekicks ever. An honourable mention to the carpet, for its high-fiving and practicality.
