She came on the morning on my 21st birthday, with a taxi running up the meter outside as she sipped Earl Grey.

“Happy birthday, darling,” she said, extra wrinkles forming as she smiled.

“Auntie Lil’s not long for this world,” my grasping aunts and uncles used to say, more in hope than confidence as she ran around spending their inheritance.

I opened the plush red box to see a sparkling, platinum credit card. “No limit,” my great-aunt winked, “and don’t you worry about those repayments.”
